Sewer Care Tips to Prevent Clogs and Backups

You may not give your sewer drain in De Pere much thought. But sewage leaving your home can cause clogs in the sewer drain that ultimately lead back to more problems inside your residential plumbing line. We are all responsible for caring for our sewer drains to protect our homes and families as well as those around us.

You can keep reading to learn more about the steps you can take to care for your plumbing system in a way that has a positive impact on the sewer connected to your home. If you ever need professional service, give our team a call and we would be happy to assist.

Drain Care

It’s important to have mesh drain covers in place that prevent most things from entering your drains. The finally woven mash of these unique wire covers helps to capture even the tiniest particles that would otherwise go down your drains. You can use them in your kitchen, bathroom sinks, and showers or tubs.

This can save the headache of drain clogs due to food particles, chunks of soap, and things like hair or paper collecting in the drain to create a clog. If you have a kitchen garbage disposal, you may think that anything can go down the drain. But this simply isn’t true. Things like eggshells and coffee grounds can cause a lot of problems in a garbage disposal.

The same goes for fibrous vegetables and pieces of meat that are harder to break down. Even with a garbage disposal, you still need to be careful about what goes down your drain. Wipe dishes off before putting them in the sink to remove most of the food.

You can also be sure to clean your garbage disposal regularly to prevent gunky buildup that can lead to corrosion. In fact, it’s a good idea to clean all of your household drains. Sprinkle some baking soda in each one and then pour vinegar over top and let the fizzy reaction break down grime in all your drains. Then you can follow with boiling water to wash it away.

Only Flush Toilet Paper

This may seem obvious, but there are probably times when you’re tempted to flush other items. An example might be a cleaning wipe or paper towel. But toilet paper is really the only thing designed to be flushed. Things like baby wipes will not break down in the sewage system.

These can lead to tough drain clogs beneath your toilet that cause slow flushing and draining. Eventually, you may even notice sewage backing up into your tubs and sinks due to the blockages.

Schedule Annual Maintenance

Even if it seems like everything is working great, it’s a good idea to go ahead and schedule annual maintenance for your residential plumbing system. Our team can ensure that all of your faucets are secure and not dripping. We can check over your water heater to see if any adjustments need to be made and take a general look at all of your plumbing connections to make sure they are secure.
